The original of this sampler is in the Glastonbury Rural Life Museum. The kit is a faithful copy of the original and measures approximatel 18" across and 10 1/2" down. The original was worked in a dark brown thread, but we decided to work it in two colourways. I woked it in the smokey blue and my 'stitching' friend Lesley Gilderthorp worked it in the dk green. I used 40 count cream linen with the smokey blue silk and Lesley used 40 count Flax linen with the dark green silk. Both of these linens are available from this website.
I have the feeling that the girl who worked the original, was not really interested in her sampler. There are numerous mistakes and obviously it is unfinished.
Unfortunately we do not have any information on the person who worked this sampler so we do not know whether the initials HB belong to her or whether they belong to a member of her family.
We have enjoyed working this sampler and hope that you will too. |
